Finnair and Zoan are col­lab­o­rat­ing on sit­u­a­tion­al aware­ness vir­tu­al real­i­ty that lets you expe­ri­ence how AI and visu­al­ized data enable seam­less oper­a­tions and bet­ter cus­tomer experience.

The Client

What is Finnair?

Finnair is a net­work air­line spe­cialised in fly­ing pas­sen­gers and car­go between Asia and Europe. Its exten­sive net­work con­nects cus­tomers between 19 Asian, 7 North Amer­i­can and over 100 Euro­pean des­ti­na­tions. Finnair has its head­quar­ters in Van­taa on the grounds of Helsin­ki Air­port, its hub.

The Brief

Finnair want­ed to show how they use visu­alised data in deci­sion mak­ing and how it leads to bet­ter cus­tomer expe­ri­ence. The pur­pose was to let the Slush Helsin­ki vis­i­tors expe­ri­ence how Finnair’s oper­a­tions are based on effec­tive use of data.

The Journey

ZOAN cre­at­ed a com­plete 3D mod­el of the Helsin­ki-Van­taa air­port for Finnair includ­ing all the detailed assets. The air­port dig­i­tal twin uti­lizes real-time data by track­ing planes and oth­er assets, and can be used as a plat­form for oth­er appli­ca­tions. The dig­i­tal air­port twin was used both in VR and AR where the user goes through dif­fer­ent oper­a­tional tasks at the airport.

The Results

The sit­u­a­tion­al aware­ness VR/AR demo was pre­sent­ed at Slush. An inter­ac­tive demo was an excel­lent tool to present Finnair’s sit­u­a­tion­al aware­ness to the Slush vis­i­tors. The vis­i­tors could get a com­pre­hen­sive and real­is­tic idea about the data-dri­ven oper­a­tions in the role of air­port staff.

Dig­i­tal twin com­bines data into one plat­form from dif­fer­ent sys­tems and oper­a­tors. This helps visu­al­iz­ing the big pic­ture at the air­port and the effects of deci­sions on cus­tomer sat­is­fac­tion and cre­ate sav­ings in cost and time.
