Helsinki Airport 3D Experience

Situational Awareness

Finnair and Zoan are collaborating on situational awareness virtual reality that lets you experience how AI and visualized data enable seamless operations and better customer experience.

The Client

What is Finnair?

Finnair is a network airline specialised in flying passengers and cargo between Asia and Europe. Its extensive network connects customers between 19 Asian, 7 North American and over 100 European destinations. Finnair has its headquarters in Vantaa on the grounds of Helsinki Airport, its hub.

The Brief

Finnair wanted to show how they use visualised data in decision making and how it leads to better customer experience. The purpose was to let the Slush Helsinki visitors experience how Finnair’s operations are based on effective use of data.

The Journey

ZOAN created a complete 3D model of the Helsinki-Vantaa airport for Finnair including all the detailed assets. The airport digital twin utilizes real-time data by tracking planes and other assets, and can be used as a platform for other applications. The digital airport twin was used both in VR and AR where the user goes through different operational tasks at the airport.

“We believe in an operational environment where visualized data and ai enables simplified and seamless decision making resulting in better customer experience.”

―Patrik Etelävuori, Digital Transformation Lead at Finnair

The Results

The situational awareness VR/AR demo was presented at Slush. An interactive demo was an excellent tool to present Finnair’s situational awareness to the Slush visitors. The visitors could get a comprehensive and realistic idea about the data-driven operations in the role of airport staff.

Digital twin combines data into one platform from different systems and operators. This helps visualizing the big picture at the airport and the effects of decisions on customer satisfaction and create savings in cost and time.
