The Client

Tallink Silja

Tallink Silja wanted to introduce the beautiful Turku archipelago to the locals and passengers that come from further away. With the virtual adventure made by Zoan, passengers of the Galaxy cruise boat can get a taste of the beauty of the 20 000 islands and the surrounding nature. There are three different environments created in VR: Seili island, the shipwreck of Vrouw Maria and Lågskär lighthouse.

From Maps and Photos to a Full VR Experience

Zoan was responsible for both the script and execution of the VR experience. Zoan first studied the history of the islands and wrote a script with three different scenes. For example, in Seili island you can run into ghosts that tell stories about the people living on the island, and you can find a treasure in a shipwreck. The VR environment is done by 3D modeling – so no cameras were used at all. The environments are made based on topography maps and photos.

Virtual Reality as a Versatile Marketing Tool

The game engine-based interactive VR was chosen instead of 360° videos as it was more affordable, while impressive and fun. Using VR to market the ferry experience allowed the company to take advantage both of paid and earned marketing. In addition to creating the VR experience, Zoan made several videos and still images from the virtual reality (real-time render) content to be used in marketing materials.

“Virtual reality offers fun content to watch even for passers-by, seeing the users are completely immersed in the adventure. We get to see when people are actually surprised or scared.”

―Juhani Mehto, The Cruise Manager

VR Offers Fun Content to
Watch Even for Passers-by

Based on the experiment, the devices could also be set up on other Silja Line boats and the content expanded. The feedback from the users has been very positive. The virtual visit can encourage people to visit the destinations in real life as well.
